Ms. Jefferson’s Journey from Crisis to Stability
Ms. Jefferson is a dedicated educator with more than 20 years of experience and holds a master’s degree. In October 2025, she enrolled in the Atlas Alliance Kinship Program seeking support for her grandson, whom she has cared for and loved since birth. Although he is not her biological grandson, Ms. Jefferson considers him family and has taken on the responsibility of providing him with the care and stability he needs.
When Ms. Jefferson first entered the program, she was experiencing significant emotional and financial hardship. She was unemployed, facing eviction, and struggling to meet her basic household expenses. She described feeling broken, overwhelmed, and hopeless because she did not have a clear plan for how she would maintain housing and continue caring for her family.
Ms. Jefferson was also managing the needs of her grandson, who has developmental delays and requires additional support and services. At the same time, she was supporting her teenage daughter as she navigated the challenges associated with divorce. Managing these responsibilities while facing financial instability left Ms. Jefferson feeling isolated and unsure of where to turn.
During her initial assessment, Ms. Jefferson identified several goals. She wanted to regain stability, become a stronger caregiver, and create a clear path forward for herself and her family. She wanted to pursue guardianship of her grandson, connect him with appropriate therapy and support services, and learn more about his developmental needs so she could better advocate for him. She also needed assistance identifying resources for food, rent, utilities, and other basic necessities.
Atlas Alliance began working with Ms. Jefferson to help her identify available community resources and develop a plan to address her immediate and long-term needs. Her case manager provided guidance, referrals, encouragement, and ongoing support as Ms. Jefferson navigated an increasingly difficult situation.
Despite receiving assistance, Ms. Jefferson continued to struggle financially. The resources available to her were not always enough to cover her past-due expenses, and the pressure of maintaining her household became increasingly difficult. There were times when she became emotional and cried because she felt overwhelmed by the responsibility of providing for her family.
During the Christmas holiday, Atlas Alliance provided Ms. Jefferson and her family with food and Christmas gifts. The support was especially meaningful because she was unable to afford these items herself. What may have seemed like a simple gesture provided Ms. Jefferson with a sense of relief and joy during an otherwise difficult period. More importantly, it reminded her that she had people and organizations willing to support her.
A Major Setback
In 2026, Ms. Jefferson faced another major challenge when she was unable to maintain her housing. She went to court and was granted additional time to address her past-due rent. However, because of financial setbacks and limited assistance available to her, she was ultimately unable to prevent the loss of her home.
Ms. Jefferson became homeless.
Her case manager immediately began helping her identify emergency housing and shelter resources close to her grandson’s school. Keeping her grandson near his school was important because Ms. Jefferson wanted to minimize disruption to his education and routine.
Although the temporary shelter provided a place to stay, the experience was extremely difficult. Ms. Jefferson described the environment as unsafe and unsuitable for her family, including concerns about cleanliness and mice. During the day, rather than giving up, she continued working toward a solution. She spent her time contacting organizations, following up on housing and financial resources, searching for employment, and communicating with her case manager.
Moving Forward
With continued support and advocacy from her Atlas Alliance case manager, Ms. Jefferson was eventually able to secure housing of her own.
This was a significant turning point.
Once she had stable housing, Ms. Jefferson was able to focus more of her energy on the needs of her grandson and on rebuilding her own future. Through referrals and connections provided by Atlas Alliance, she was able to connect her grandson with services and organizations that could support his developmental and educational needs. She also connected with community organizations that could assist with household expenses and other areas of need.
Just as importantly, Ms. Jefferson found a community where she felt supported rather than judged. Having someone to help her navigate resources, identify options, and remain encouraged during difficult moments made a meaningful difference in her ability to continue moving forward.
Today, Ms. Jefferson is working part-time and continues to manage her finances carefully. She still faces financial challenges and is working toward finding a better-paying job that will provide greater stability for her family. However, she recognizes that she is in a much better place than she was when she first entered the Atlas Alliance Kinship Program.
She is now exploring the possibility of legally adopting her grandson and remains committed to ensuring that he receives the care, education, therapy, and support he needs. With her daughter now attending college, Ms. Jefferson is able to devote more of her attention to advocating for her grandson while continuing to rebuild her own life.
A New Sense of Hope
Ms. Jefferson’s circumstances have not changed overnight, and her journey is not over. She continues to face financial challenges and is working toward greater independence. However, the difference between where she began and where she is today is significant.
When she entered the Atlas Alliance Kinship Program, Ms. Jefferson was unemployed, facing eviction, overwhelmed by caregiving responsibilities, and uncertain about how she would provide for her family. She experienced homelessness and moments when she felt she had nowhere else to turn.
Through the support of Atlas Alliance and the consistent guidance of her case manager, Ms. Jefferson was able to connect with resources, navigate a housing crisis, secure a home, access services for her grandson, and build connections within her community.
Most importantly, she regained a sense of direction.
Ms. Jefferson is now looking toward the future with greater hope and purpose. She continues to work toward financial stability, pursue opportunities for employment, and advocate for her grandson. Her story is a reminder that supportive relationships, access to resources, and consistent guidance can help a caregiver move through even the most difficult circumstances.
While Ms. Jefferson still has challenges ahead, she is no longer facing them alone. She is in a more stable place, has a home for her family, has connected her grandson to needed resources, and is continuing to take steps toward a stronger and more secure future.
